Gayle Rankin recently dove deep into the intense world of House of the Dragon, offering a candid explanation of the challenging and emotionally layered scenes that defined the show’s recent episodes. Her insights illuminate not only the technical difficulties of complex filming but also the complicated emotional landscape of the characters vying for power in Westeros.

Rankin focused particularly on the provocative opening sequence from Season 3, Episode 7, which involved Aemond experiencing hallucinations of his mother Alicent during an intimate encounter with Alys Rivers. She described the shoot as both “very intimate and very odd,” yet ultimately “very professional.” To navigate the discomfort inherent in such complex material, the cast employed humor on set, aiming to keep the demanding scenes lighthearted despite their technical complexity. Rankin summed up the experience by noting it was essentially “another day at the office for being like a very odd, fucked-up scene.”

The emotional stakes deepened later in the episode with a tense family dinner after Alicent arrived at Harrenhal. While Rankin described filming this sequence as “terrible” and “awful,” she admitted that she somehow “kind of loved it.” She speculated that Alys was deliberately pushing boundaries, intending to make the experience unbearable for Alicent, which ultimately led to Alicent’s desperate act of drugging Aemond and seeking refuge.

Beyond the physical tension on screen, Rankin offered a compelling perspective on the relationship dynamic between Alys and Aemond. She firmly believes that Alys harbors genuine romantic feelings for Aemond, even amidst their unusual connection. Rankin suggested that their bond is not simple; she characterized them as a dark power couple, noting that Aemond attracts Alys because he remains so “unabashedly himself.”

Adding another layer to the intrigue, it was revealed that Alys had shared hidden dragon eggs with Aemond, a secret she withheld from Daemon. Rankin suggested this secrecy stemmed from Daemon’s failure to fully open up to her. Meanwhile, neither Alys nor Aemond were aware that Aegon has discovered Sunfyre alive, placing them in a precarious position as they face escalating danger heading into the season finale.

House of the Dragon Season 3 will air its finale next week on HBO and stream on Max, promising further upheaval for the Targaryen dynasty.
