How Michael Waldron Wrote Nova
While the world watches the latest episodes of “Chad Powers” on Hulu, writer Michael Waldron is keeping the cosmic excitement flowing by promoting another high-profile project he is deeply involved with: Marvel Studios’ Nova.
The journey for the Nova property had been long, languishing in development for years as a potential Disney+ series. However, recently, the studio made a significant pivot, deciding to rework the concept into a feature film, and Waldron was brought in to pen the script for this ambitious new direction.
Waldron brings a wealth of experience to the table, having already contributed to the Marvel universe in several major capacities. His resume includes serving as head writer and executive producer on the acclaimed Loki series, and co-writing the cinematic experience of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Speaking about his connection to the character, Waldron shared his genuine enthusiasm for the mythology. “I don’t know if I can say anything about anything I’m doing with Marvel,” he admitted, “but I will say, I love Nova. I love Rich Rider. However, we expand the cosmic side of the MCU will be really cool.”
He pondered the structural challenge of telling the story of the Nova character, noting that the character spans many generations. “The reason it has taken some time to get him to the screen is figuring out where do you start that story? Do you start him on Earth? Do you start in space, as part of the Nova Corps? Whoever does it, I hope they do a good job,” he mused.
Waldron also addressed the weighty thematic questions that come with expanding the Marvel universe. When asked how the events of Avengers: Infinity War, which saw the Nova Corps wiped out, would be addressed in the new narrative, he offered a profound response. “They would have to reckon with that. Yeah… someone would have to reckon with that.”
