Amazon MGM Studios has just offered a fresh look at the legendary origins of the iconic 1976 boxing classic with the unveiling of the second trailer for Peter Farrelly’s new biopic, I Play Rocky. This project promises to delve into the true genesis of the Rocky Balboa character and the journey of the film that redefined cinematic drama.

The narrative centers on the struggles and ambition behind the creation of the film. Anthony Ippolito steps into the role of the young Sylvester Stallone, portraying a struggling actor grappling with physical and personal challenges, including a partially paralyzed face and a speech impediment. Ippolito’s character’s quest is compelling: he writes a script coveted by major studios but refuses to sell it unless he is granted the role of the lead.

Instead of chasing large sums of money, Ippolito opts for the hard path, working tirelessly for pennies to bring his vision to life, determined to earn his place in the spotlight through sheer grit. This commitment to authenticity is set against the backdrop of an ambitious cinematic history.

The film pays homage to the legacy of the original Rocky, a movie that exploded onto the scene in 1976, securing ten Oscar nominations and a Best Picture win before spawning an enduring franchise. The ambitious project is helmed by director Peter Farrelly, working from a script penned by Peter Gamble. Farrelly, along with producers Toby Emmerich and Christian Baha, are guiding this retelling.

The casting is stacked with talent, bringing a diverse group of actors to the screen alongside Ippolito. Starring alongside him are Matt Dillon, AnnaSophia Robb, P.J. Byrne, Toby Kebbell, Tracy Letts, Jay Duplass, and Stephan James, who plays the unforgettable character of Carl Weathers.

Farrelly’s vision for the project has already garnered positive attention, with the film having recently appeared on the Fall film festival circuit to generate buzz.

Fans can look forward to the film, which will hit theaters in a carefully managed release schedule. It will begin in a limited release on November 6th, followed by a wide release on November 20th, cleverly coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the original Rocky, which premiered in cinemas on November 21st, 1976. It is an event that honors cinematic history while telling a deeply human story of aspiration and perseverance.
