The epic saga of Greek mythology is taking an unexpected detour. Amazon’s highly anticipated television adaptation of the God of War video game series has hit a significant pause, following a serious injury to one of its key stars.

The news comes from Vancouver, where actor Ryan Hurst, who brings the stoic intensity of Kratos to the screen, sustained an injury while filming a stunt. Reports indicate that Hurst tore his bicep severely enough that he will require surgery, temporarily halting production on the series.

While production had optimistically hoped to resume filming in mid-August, the necessary recovery time has proven longer than anticipated. This means that the massive journey of Kratos and his son will likely not see the cameras rolling until 2027.

Despite this unexpected delay, the creative momentum remains strong. Filming began back in February, meaning a substantial portion of the season has already been captured, setting the stage for an even grander narrative waiting to unfold.

This television spectacle follows the complex relationship between father and son Kratos and Atreus (played by Callum Vinson) as they embark on a profound journey. Their adventure centers on spreading the ashes of their lost mother and wife, Faye, while simultaneously grappling with the philosophical quest to teach each other how to be better—Kratos learning humanity, and Atreus learning divinity.

The sprawling mythology is anchored by an impressive ensemble cast that breathes life into the ancient world. Alongside Hurst, the series features a stellar lineup including Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, and Teresa Palmer as Sif.
