J.K. Simmons Rejected for Obsession/Backrooms Horror Movie Role
A new horror film is generating buzz, drawing comparisons to atmospheric psychological thrillers like Backrooms and Obsession. But behind the chilling visuals of the upcoming movie, the story of how it found its footing is just as fascinating: it’s a tale of creative vision clashing with studio demands.
The production of Godmother initially faced a serious hurdle. Investors and traditional studios pushed for a specific type of star power, insisting that the filmmakers bring in an A-list actor to mitigate financial risk. In fact, one company specified that J.K. Simmons should be cast in a prominent role.
However, co-creator and producer Alanah Pearce strongly rejected this demand. Pearce argued that forcing the inclusion of a veteran actor would fundamentally change the movie’s core identity.
In an interview, Pearce explained her rationale: “A lot of what I put into the script is specific to bringing in a female perspective to what was already a very female-led story. Our three leading women are vastly different people, and how these women are perceived — and judged — by the world accordingly was a big focus for me: Who is discarded, who is rewarded, who is respected, and why.”
Pearce feared that such external pressures would transform Godmother into something completely different from the vision she held. She noted that studio requirements were pushing the project in a direction she felt was contrary to the story’s true focus.
Because of this creative disagreement, the project found its path forward independently. YouTuber Sean McLoughlin, the Australian video game writer, and Pearce decided to move ahead without external interference. McLoughlin handled the main filming financing, while Helmstreet Pictures covered the post-production costs.
The film itself promises a blend of unsettling atmosphere and relatable narrative. The synopsis details a weekend trip disrupted by sinister forces: “Theo and her boyfriend Colby travel to the High Desert for a romantic weekend. Their plans are disrupted by two seemingly friendly retirees, who have sinister intentions for Theo.”
The film is helmed by director John Veron, who co-wrote the story alongside Pearce. The cast features a compelling ensemble of talent, including Dee Wallace, Bruce Davidson, Khary Payton, Riley Dandy, Cameron Cuffe, Paige Evans, Carl Savering, and Madelynn Joy Stuenkel. While a specific release date is yet to be revealed, Godmother is poised to be an independent horror event built on a strong, distinct creative foundation.
