Instead, Marvel tucked this chaotic genius into a surprisingly strange corner of the MCU, where he spent years in confinement, learning, and apparently picking up an unexpected hobby.
The mystery of where Ultron went all this time has finally been unveiled, offering a bizarre look at the life of the villain before his journey into VisionQuest. James Spader, who voices Ultron, sat down to explain the peculiar details of this extended sentence, revealing that the AI has effectively been held captive within Vision’s mind since their last confrontation.
Ultron‘s prison isn’t a traditional cell; it’s a mindscape, but this confinement comes with some truly unique perks. Spader noted that Ultron had access to the entire digital world, allowing him to consume endless streams of internet content, television shows, and historical materials. When pressed on the veracity of this digital indulgence, the actor simply stated, “Those are all truths.”
But the confinement wasn’t just passive observation. Spader revealed that Ultron also spent his time engaging in surprisingly artistic and disruptive activities, including “painting” and “making trouble.” This paints a distinctly different picture of the murderous AI than audiences remember, showcasing a complex, if volatile, relationship with Vision.
The dynamic between Ultron and Vision is anything but peaceful. According to Paul Bettany, the AI sports an enormous beard, humorously compared to the magnificent beard of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, suggesting someone could practically hide a badger within its magnificent facial hair.
