Anime Tsunami: Japan’s Industry Hits New Heights in 2025

The world of Japanese animation is not just evolving; it is roaring. In 2025, the global anime industry achieved a remarkable surge, expanding by 15.8% to reach a staggering total revenue of $28.18 billion, or approximately JPY4.45 trillion.

This impressive growth is a testament to the enduring global appeal of Japanese storytelling. The expansion did not rely solely on domestic success but was fueled by an increasingly powerful international appetite for anime across the globe.

The most striking aspect of this expansion is the dominance of the overseas market. International revenues soared to $16.1 billion, which accounts for nearly 57% of the industry’s total earnings. This highlights anime’s successful transition from a niche interest to a mainstream, cross-cultural phenomenon.

Meanwhile, the domestic market remains a robust engine for the industry, contributing significantly to the overall success. Domestic revenues stood at $12 billion, demonstrating a healthy and deeply engaged fanbase within Japan itself.

These figures, presented by the Association of Japanese Animations (AJA) during the TIFFCOM event, paint a vivid picture of an industry positioned for continued exponential growth. The strong balance between local production and massive international consumption confirms anime’s role as a powerful cultural export.
