Spending on Japanese anime has hit an astonishing new high, marking a remarkable surge in global consumption. In 2025, the worldwide expenditure reached a staggering JPY4.45 trillion, which translates to approximately $28.2 billion.

This impressive figure represents a significant jump, growing by 15.8% compared to the previous year. What makes this growth particularly compelling is the shift in consumer base: overseas customers now account for more than half of the total spending, underscoring anime’s powerful global appeal.

These preliminary figures were unveiled during the recent TIFFCOM event. The data was presented by Hasegawa Masahiro, editor-in-chief of the Association of Japanese Animations’ (AJA) annual “Anime Industry Report.”

The results highlight anime’s transition from a niche interest to a mainstream, global cultural phenomenon. The record spending confirms that the demand for Japanese animation continues to expand dramatically across international markets, cementing its status as a truly worldwide entertainment powerhouse.
