The chilling waters of Toronto recently hosted a preview of a new horror spectacle, as Blumhouse and Universal Pictures unveiled the trailer for Joshua Giuliano’s brutal slasher film, River.

The project immediately drew attention, pairing two established modern scream queens. The film brings together Jessica Rothe, known for her work in Happy Death Day, and Jane Levy, celebrated for roles in films like Don’t Breathe and Evil Dead.

These two actresses anchor a story of raw grief and terrifying survival. In the narrative, the estranged sisters reunite with their younger brother to visit their rural hometown. Their mission is somber: to scatter their late father’s ashes along a remote river.

But this poignant family reunion quickly descends into pure nightmare. As twilight settles, the group finds themselves completely isolated. The boat is dead, cell service is nonexistent, and they are stranded miles from any form of help.

The silence is shattered by a terrifying presence. Standing on the shore, silently watching, is an unseen figure—a masked entity that promises merciless retribution.

The peace is instantly replaced by a desperate fight for survival. The sisters and their brother must now contend not only with the unforgiving wilderness but with a disturbing, masked hunter who is relentlessly stalking them.

Originally, the project was positioned as a Shudder Original Production, with an independent film company handling its initial theatrical release. However, plans have shifted, and Universal is now set to give the film a full theatrical release on January 15th, signaling a major push for wider exposure.

The trailer itself, which first appeared on Dark Horizons, perfectly sets the stage for a brutal encounter—a story where the tragedy of a family secret merges with the visceral fear of a deadly hunt.
