Joe Bob fights for the drive-in rare writing unseen
Prepare to dust off your cinematic history, because America’s most infamous drive-in movie critic, Joe Bob Briggs, is back with a monumental new project that promises to deliver a treasure trove of forgotten film lore. Following the recent conclusion of Shudder’s special programming, Briggs is channeling his signature blend of razor-sharp wit, redneck philosophy, and deep B movie obsession into a definitive collection.
Dark Horse Books is set to present Joe Bob Fights for the Drive-In, an art book-sized hardcover edition that serves as a comprehensive testament to the golden age of drive-in cinema. This special edition is a remarkable compilation, gathering material written by Briggs that has remained unseen for decades, alongside rare reviews and columns that never made it into print in their original form.
The book is a true collector’s item, featuring contributions from some of the greats. It showcases cover art by Eric Powell, illustrator Mike Norton, and an introduction by Wayne Newton, bringing together a visually rich and historically deep narrative. The content is drawn from Briggs’s earlier works, including Joe Bob Goes to the Drive-In and Joe Bob Goes Back to the Drive-In, plus exclusive material that has never before been collected in book form.
Briggs himself has expressed excitement about the new venture. “I originally planned to just put Joe Bob Goes Back to the Drive-In back into print and call it a day,” he shared. “Instead, we decided to blow the doors wide open. Joe Bob Fights for the Drive-In brings together columns and letters from both Joe Bob Goes to the Drive-In and Joe Bob Goes Back to the Drive-In, plus a treasure trove of reviews that haven’t seen the light of day since they first ran in newspapers and magazines decades ago. Dark Horse is helping me bring the ultimate drive-in testament to a whole new generation of mutants.”
Joe Bob Fights for the Drive-In is scheduled to arrive in comic shops and bookstores on July 20, 2027. Fans can begin preordering the hardcover edition now through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and local retailers.
The excitement surrounding Briggs’s legacy is only growing. While the book is gearing up for release, other exciting developments are on the horizon. Dynamite Entertainment is also set to revive the retro MonsterVision brand for a brand new comic book series featuring Joe Bob Briggs and Darcy the mail girl. This new comic series is slated for release in December 2026.
Meanwhile, the ongoing narrative surrounding Joe Bob and Darcy concludes with a festive finish. The final episode of “The Last Drive-In,” titled Joe Bob Conquers Christmas, will premiere on December 4, marking the end of Joe Bob and Darcy’s adventures on Shudder.
