John Goodman joins The Last of Us
The world of television adaptation is buzzing with news, and the upcoming third season of HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us is poised to deliver some truly intriguing casts. The network recently unveiled major casting announcements, bringing in a trio of established actors known for their compelling presence: John Goodman, Ian Alexander, and Laura Bailey.
These newcomers are set to inject fresh energy into the post-apocalyptic narrative. Goodman and Alexander have stepped into the roles of Joey and Paco, a dynamic duo who introduce the audience to the Heroes of the Highway. These characters are entirely original to the television series, offering new perspectives within the ravaged world.
Adding depth to the saga is Laura Bailey, who will portray Elizabeth, one of the key figures leading the religious sect known as the Seraphites. Her presence will be particularly significant, as the Seraphites play a pivotal role in both the second and especially this highly anticipated third season.
What makes this casting particularly fascinating is the history shared by some of these actors and the game’s source material. Both Ian Alexander and Laura Bailey have previously played the co-leading roles of Abby and Lev in the latter half of The Last of Us Part II game. Bailey, in particular, faced intense backlash and death threats from gamers regarding the actions of her character, underscoring the emotional weight already attached to her portrayal.
This trio joins a rich ensemble of talent for the new season. They are joined by other exciting additions, including Jason Ritter, Patrick Wilson, Clea DuVall, and Jorge Lendeborg Jr. The cast also features powerful returning faces such as Kaitlyn Dever, Isabela Merced, Gabriel Luna, Jeffrey Wright, Ariella Barer, Tati Gabrielle, Spencer Lord, and Bella Ramsey.
Production is currently progressing, with filming continuing through November. The season is being helmed by showrunner Craig Mazin, who is guiding the narrative forward. Fans can expect the new chapter of the story to premiere on HBO in the back half of next year.
