Jonathan Levine directs Days of Thunder 2
Jonathan Levine is currently in high-level negotiations to direct a sequel to the 1990 NASCAR racing drama, Days of Thunder, starring Tom Cruise, aiming for production at Paramount Pictures.
The original film, a product of the legendary “Top Gun” team, including director Tony Scott and producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, arrived with a mixed reception upon its release. Yet, it has cemented itself in cinematic memory, largely remembered today for the chemistry between Cruise and Nicole Kidman, coupled with Scott’s robust action sequences and the instantly memorable musical score by Hans Zimmer.
Now, that classic narrative is finding a new chapter. Tom Cruise is reportedly on board to star in the follow-up and will be co-producing the project alongside Jerry Bruckheimer. This long-rumored collaboration has begun taking serious shape, with discussions intensifying as the project moves closer to production.
Levine brings a fresh perspective to this potential blockbuster. His recent work demonstrates an ability to handle compelling narratives, most notably his direction of the sports drama Mr. Irrelevant, which generated significant buzz during test screenings earlier this year. Adding another layer of creative depth, Will Staples is penning the script for the upcoming installment.
While the focus remains on the racing spectacle, Levine’s directorial trajectory continues to impress. He has also recently taken the helm on other projects, including Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s dark comedy Digger, which Tom Cruise will also be seen in later this year. This portfolio showcases a filmmaker capable of navigating both high-octane action and nuanced dramatic storytelling.
