Keanu’s Flop Redeems Itself on Streaming

Keanu Reeves remains a fixture in Hollywood, yet even his devoted fanbase might be surprised by the unexpected trajectory of his 2025 fantasy-comedy, Good Fortune. After struggling to find footing in the theatrical market, the film has staged a remarkable comeback on streaming, climbing high into Amazon Prime Video’s most-watched rankings.

As of September 1, 2026, Good Fortune has secured the No. 6 spot on Amazon Prime Video’s overall Top 10 chart in the United States. It competes with major titles like Reacher and The Last Sunrise, and it specifically claims the No. 4 position among movies, challenging titles such as Masters of the Universe and Project Hail Mary.

This cinematic triumph is the result of a fascinating premise directed by Aziz Ansari, who brought his feature directorial debut to the screen. The cast is stacked with familiar and brilliant talent, featuring Keanu Reeves as the angel Gabriel, alongside Seth Rogen, Keke Palmer, and Sandra Oh.

The film’s journey began with a modest theatrical release on October 17, 2025. Despite its charming concept, the movie only grossed $26 million globally against a $30 million production budget, leading to a quiet run at the box office.

The story itself is a delightful tangle of destiny and life lessons. It follows Arj, played by Ansari, a struggling man living out of his car who works odd jobs for wealthy clients. When Arj reaches rock bottom, he encounters Gabriel, a guardian angel determined to teach him that wealth doesn’t equate to happiness. Gabriel attempts a life swap with Jeff, played by Rogen, but the plan quickly spirals into beautiful, unexpected chaos when Arj’s problems vanish, causing Gabriel’s angelic mission to unravel around him.

Critics were quick to praise the film’s heart and humor. It garnered a 79% Tomatometer score and an 80% Popcornmeter rating, with reviewers consistently highlighting the chemistry among the cast and Ansari’s sharp comedic sensibility.

Ansari developed the project after Searchlight Pictures suspended his previous directorial effort, Being Mortal, in 2022. He sought to create an original theatrical comedy, inspired by the enduring audience appetite for the kind of fun films that define modern entertainment. Rogen, a longtime friend, provided crucial inspiration for several elements of the narrative and joined the production shortly after Being Mortal was shelved.

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, 2025, before its domestic release. Now, streaming audiences are finally getting to discover the full, engaging story that the theatrical crowd missed.
