Vivian spoke openly about the complex post-production process of the 1999 release. She clarified that when her father passed away in March 1999, the film was already in the final stages of post-production. She stated that she never heard any information suggesting that twenty minutes had been removed from the final cut.
While she acknowledges that she was not privy to every detail of the immediate events surrounding her father’s death, she notes that the only alteration she recalls hearing about at the time concerned the controversial orgy sequence. Warner Bros. had requested changes to secure an R rating for the film, leading to the addition of CGI figures to obscure some of the nudity.
Vivian further elaborated on the history of the film’s archival process, which explains why the missing material is so elusive today. The film was edited using the Avid system in 1999, relying on standard-definition video transfers of the film’s rushes. Crucially, the unused footage and outtakes were systematically destroyed by Kubrick himself. It was his established practice to incinerate any material that the studio might use for re-editing or creating alternate versions.
While the absence of surviving unused footage does not automatically settle the mystery of the missing twenty minutes, it does offer a tangible explanation for their disappearance. The master negative and intermediate elements were preserved, but the material that was not needed was intentionally destroyed to prevent any possibility of unauthorized alterations to the finished work.
Despite the enduring fascination with the alleged missing scenes, Vivian remains resolute: without substantive evidence to the contrary, the story that twenty minutes were excised from Eyes Wide Shut remains firmly in the realm of speculation.
