Loki actor casts as surprising DC villain in Batman series

Wunmi Mosaku is set to bring a radically different spin to one of the DC universe’s most notorious villains in the upcoming second season of Batman: Caped Crusader. Co-showrunner James Tucker has confirmed that Mosaku will lend her voice to the formidable and complex villain, Roxy Rocket.

This is no ordinary rehash; the creative team is aiming for a portrayal that completely reshapes the character, moving beyond previous interpretations to explore deeper emotional territory. As a former stuntwoman turned robber, Roxy Rocket is already a significant figure in the Dark Knight’s extensive rogues’ gallery, and this new direction promises to unlock layers of untold history for the character.

The shift in approach focuses heavily on motive. The development of Roxy Rocket’s story centers on tragedy and anger, framing her actions as a quest for revenge rather than simple villainy. This backstory is designed to allow the audience to connect with the character on an intensely human level.

Tucker revealed that the casting opportunity allowed them to infuse the character with new depth. “We gave her a tragic backstory that she was able to tap into, and the anger,” the veteran animator explained. She noted that in the context of the show, while it is ultimately a revenge story, they are deliberately keeping the exact trajectory mysterious at first, adding an element of intrigue until the full scope of her pain is revealed.

The visual and conceptual design for Roxy Rocket also reflects this new sensibility. Tucker drew inspiration from figures like rocket engineer Jack Parsons and the legendary 1950s sci-fi hero Commando Cody, along with DC’s own Bulletman, shaping her aesthetic into something uniquely dangerous. Furthermore, to emphasize her reckless nature, the designers opted for a head shape reminiscent of a missile or a bullet—a fitting nod to her tendency to shoot herself through obstacles.

Beyond the character itself, this reimagining serves a larger thematic purpose for the series. By introducing Roxy Rocket, the creators intend for her arc to impact Batman directly. Tucker suggested that Rocket’s presence will act as a catalyst, helping Bruce Wayne experience empathy and challenge his typically single-minded focus. She is meant to be a mirror that forces him to reassess his worldview.

Fans can look forward to seeing these evolving dynamics unfold as the Caped Crusader series continues its journey. The second season is currently on track to premiere on July 31 on Prime Video, promising a fresh and intense dive into the world of Gotham’s most compelling adversaries.
