Mahershala Ali agrees with Feige’s ‘Gigantic Loser’ admission
The universe of superhero cinema often seems destined for epic success, but occasionally, even the biggest studios stumble. This is perhaps best illustrated by the journey of the Blade reboot, a project that navigated years of creative shifts and ultimately settled into the annals of ambitious, but ultimately abandoned, attempts.
One of the most candid reflections on this cinematic rollercoaster came from superstar Mahershala Ali. While promoting his recent work, Ali opened up about the abandoned MCU film, sharing his perspective on why the project never found its way to the big screen.
Ali agreed wholeheartedly with Kevin Feige’s frank assessment of the project’s trajectory. He recognized the immense pressure and scope behind Marvel’s endeavors, acknowledging the weight of billions of dollars invested in a film that ultimately stalled.
“They had a two-time Oscar-winning actor under contract and you got billions of dollars,” Ali shared. “That’s a question for them. I don’t know why it didn’t happen. I just know that it was Kevin. He said it was the biggest failure of his career, and I agree.”
This reflection highlights the shared experience among industry leaders regarding the complex challenges of developing major cinematic franchises. The Blade project experienced multiple creative changes and delays, bouncing through various directorial changes, including initial work by Bassam Tariq and later Yann Demange, before finally being removed from the release calendar by the studio in 2024.
The story of Blade is a reminder that even with immense resources and established talent, the path from concept to screen is fraught with hurdles. Despite the setbacks, Ali has since channeled his focus into new creative ventures, recently reuniting with Tariq for the critically acclaimed film Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother.
It is a testament to the enduring power of storytelling that while one chapter closes, new, compelling narratives are always ready to unfold.
