Mahershala Ali slams Marvel over the failure of Blade
Seven years ago, a star was announced for a role that promised to be legendary: Mahershala Ali was cast as the iconic Blade at San Diego Comic-Con. The excitement was palpable, but behind the hype lay the reality of a project stuck in development hell, cycling through creative changes for years without a clear destination.
Eventually, Ali made the decision to step away from the process, a choice that rings true for many who have watched cinematic ambitions stall. The journey of Blade became a microcosm of the industry’s long, winding road, filled with delays and unexpected detours.
When discussing the project’s stalled trajectory, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige admitted that the film’s failure was deeply personal for him, calling it “a gigantic loser and failure that we didn’t get off the ground with Mahershala.” This admission resonated with Ali, who shared his own experience of the frustrating limbo.
“That’s a Kevin Feige question,” Ali noted, reflecting on the circumstances. He posited that the factors behind the development struggle were beyond personal choice, emphasizing the immense pressure of the corporate machine. While the outcome remains unknown, the sheer duration of the delays speaks volumes.
During this prolonged wait, Ali was not idle. He took a determined path, dedicating himself to intense training and making significant personal sacrifices, including uprooting his family and moving to Atlanta. He spent a year honing his craft, pushing past the external pressures that kept the project perpetually on hold.
The creative direction also shifted dramatically. The film initially considered Bassam Tariq for the role, but as the project evolved, other voices were brought in. Ali personally searched for the right fit, ultimately selecting Yann Demange, who also eventually departed the project.
The development faced further roadblocks when the WGA and SAG strikes shut down production in 2023. Even after those strikes concluded, the project lay dormant. Key personnel, including Delroy Lindo and Aaron Pierre, departed, and new writers were brought in to tackle the script. Currently, Ali’s only appearance in the MCU is a brief, vocal cameo in the post-credit scene of Eternals.
Despite the turbulence, the creative spirit persisted. Now, Ali is embarking on a new adventure with a project helmed by the original director of Blade, Bassam Tariq. The new action thriller, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, will see Ali as Latif, a devoutly religious hitman navigating faith, fatherhood, and peril. This compelling new chapter is set to hit theaters on September 25.
