Seven years after first being announced for the iconic role of Blade, actor Mahershala Ali has officially declared he is moving on from the project that never materialized.

This shift follows a fascinating history with the cinematic universe of Blade, particularly his collaboration with filmmaker Bassim Tariq on the upcoming film Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother.

The connection between Ali and the failed project lies in the fact that Tariq had departed the production of Blade abruptly in September 2022, years before filming was planned. This gap meant that the desire for a remake or continuation never truly took root during the production process.

Ali reflects on this history, noting that while the potential for a franchise existed, it ultimately did not materialize. He argues that if the studios had genuinely wanted to pursue such an endeavor, they would have made it happen. “If they wanted to do it, we would’ve done it,” he stated, emphasizing his desire to focus on projects that resonate with him personally.

For Ali, this history has shaped his perspective on his career trajectory. He expressed a clear preference for creating original work that has a unique impact, rather than engaging in remakes. “I don’t really want to be known for remakes. I’d love to do original work that resonates with people and impacts them in unique ways,” he explained.

He felt this redirection was crucial, especially since the opportunity to collaborate on Blade had vanished. He noted that the absence of that project allowed him to pursue projects like Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, which he feels are perfectly aligned with his artistic vision.

Ali suggested that the lack of a completed film was actually a catalyst for creative redemption. He remarked that the opportunity to work on new material allowed him to use the skills he had been honing over the past year while training for Blade, fostering a personal journey between himself and his craft.

The current focus is set on Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, which opens in cinemas on September 25th and will premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. In this film, Ali plays a recently widowed and devoutly religious hitman who embarks on a desperate journey across Houston to protect his children.
