Mariska Hargitay, the iconic star known for bringing Olivia Benson to life on Law & Order: SVU, recently shared a moment of pure career anxiety, revealing that she genuinely feared losing her job when presented with an unexpected opportunity.

The worry stemmed from an astonishing offer: the chance to host the prestigious 2026 Emmy Awards. During an appearance on The Today Show, Hargitay recounted the dramatic moment she received the call.

“I was backstage, doing my play, and I got a call. It was Pearlena Igbokwe, who is the head of the network, and I thought, ‘Oh, I should answer this. Am I getting fired?’” Hargitay recalled with a palpable sense of disbelief.

When asked about hosting the Emmys, she admitted that her initial reaction was stunned silence. She confessed that she struggled to process the idea, especially since historically, the Emmy hosting role has often gone to comedians. It was probably the farthest thing from her mind that she had considered this possibility, leading to a moment of genuine shock.

However, after taking time to reflect over the weekend, Hargitay found herself flipping the script. She explained that curiosity and a sense of momentum eventually won out, prompting the realization: “I thought about it over the weekend, and then I started going, ‘Why not?’ which is where I kind of am in my life.”

Ultimately, she accepted the role, feeling an incredible surge of pride rather than fear. Hargitay expressed how honored she felt to be selected for the event, noting that knowing she would be the first woman in 15 years to host the ceremony was absolutely thrilling.

The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards are scheduled for September 14, 2026, and will be broadcast live by NBC and Peacock. Hargitay is set to make history by becoming the inaugural woman to host the event, cementing her status as a true trailblazer in television.
