Darkwing Duck Gets a Dangerous Reboot on Disney+ with Mark Hamill as the Hero
Get ready for some high-flying, ego-fueled adventure. Disney+ has officially greenlit a brand new animated series based on the beloved classic, Darkwing Duck, promising a thrilling return for the crime-fighting superhero.
The star of this exciting revival will be the legendary Mark Hamill, who will lend his iconic voice to Darkwing Duck, aka Drake Mallard. This new iteration won’t just revisit the past; it leaps forward in time, bringing older versions of the characters into a dynamic, modern universe, ready for some seriously dangerous exploits.
The series’ logline sets the stage for epic action and high stakes: “For the last 35 years, Darkwing Duck has been trapped in his worst nightmare: an alternate world that’s never heard of his superhero exploits. Now a rebellious teen named Duckie who knows all about his heroic past shows up to pull this ego-fueled vigilante back into battle. Together, this unlikely duo will get dangerous to fight old enemies like Negaduck and Megavolt and reunite with allies Launchpad, Gosalyn and Morgana to save the entire universe.”
The story promises a thrilling mix of classic character dynamics and fresh, high-octane action. Fans can expect the duo to face formidable foes while reuniting with trusted allies to defend the cosmos.
Beyond Hamill’s commanding performance, the cast is stacked with familiar and fresh talent. Seth Rogen will bring his signature energy as Launchpad McQuack, while Lizzy Caplan steps in as Gosalyn Mallard, and Lilimar will portray Duckie. Supporting the core team are Dan Stevens as Glade McTowers, Tiffany Shepis as Rosa, Kathryn Newton as Firecracker, Teo Briones as Timb, Tyler Dean Flores as Pondsy, Katie Rich as Officer Shanks, and Nat Faxon as Officer Webb.
The creative force behind the project brings a deep understanding of the source material. Tad Stones, who consulted on the development, is excited to see the series push the action and comedy while keeping the essential Disney heart intact. He notes that the new creative team has amplified the action and comedy without losing the spirit of the original characters.
The vision draws inspiration from literary legends, placing Darkwing Duck in the tradition of heroes like Robin Hood, Zorro, and Sherlock Holmes, heroes whose lore has been masterfully reinterpreted across different mediums. The series promises to have Darkwing Duck grab the spotlight in a cloud of blue smoke, exploring new eras and relationships.
The series is helmed by executive producers Sean Tretta and Borja Peña Gorostegui, ensuring that the creative journey remains grounded in both theatrical fun and imaginative storytelling.
