McAvoy almost played young Picard in a secret Star Trek series

James McAvoy has a dream project simmering just beneath the surface of the sci-fi universe: stepping into the boots of a young Jean-Luc Picard. After bringing a younger version of Patrick Stewart’s Professor Xavier to life in the X-Men films, McAvoy is now chasing a similar ambition, aiming to inhabit the role of a younger Starfleet captain in a potential Star Trek series.

This desire led him to pitch an idea to the Star Trek community: a limited series titled Mutiny on the Stargazer, where he would play Picard taking command of the USS Stargazer. McAvoy shared his enthusiasm on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, revealing that he has a whole story about an early Picard that he loves, and he is eager to follow in his mentor’s footsteps creatively.

“I’ve got a whole story about a young Picard,” McAvoy explained, describing the narrative of a standalone season where Picard assumed command, and the secret he has been holding throughout his career. While he pitched this concept to the Star Trek creators, logistical issues ultimately prevented the idea from becoming a reality. Despite this, the story remains a favorite for him to ponder at night.

The ambition of such a project feels particularly resonant given the current state of the Star Trek franchise. The saga is currently navigating a turbulent patch, marked by a series of high-profile cancellations that have left fans wondering about the future of the space exploration epic. Paramount recently decided to cancel Starfleet Academy after its first season, and several other entries, including Discovery, Lower Decks, Prodigy, and Picard, have been phased out.

This recent churn suggests a shaky horizon for the franchise, prompting fans to question what direction the saga will take next. Will the focus shift entirely to new characters, or will beloved stories like McAvoy’s vision be given a chance to breathe in a new form? Whether the next chapter of Star Trek will embrace fresh faces or stick to established lore remains one of the great uncertainties facing the universe today.
