MOT director on box office bomb deserved better fate

The world of blockbuster filmmaking often presents a peculiar paradox: a film can fail spectacularly at the box office while simultaneously achieving massive success in the digital streaming age. This dynamic tension was the defining story of the recent release of Masters of the Universe.

Despite generally positive critical reception, the film struggled to capture a wide audience in theaters. With a budget of $170 million, the movie ultimately grossed only $114 million worldwide, earning the distinction of a certified box office bomb. However, this commercial stumble gave way to an overwhelming digital triumph. Launched on Prime Video, Masters of the Universe became a streaming phenomenon, racking up more than 1 billion minutes viewed during its inaugural week.

The streaming success provided a stark contrast to the theatrical performance, leading the director, Travis Knight, to reflect on the nature of cinematic outcomes. Knight noted that the film’s true life unfolded on streaming, suggesting that this digital engagement held more weight than its initial run in cinemas.

“Its life on streaming was much more important to Amazon than its life in the theaters,” Knight explained. He admitted that he entered the project without fully grasping the final outcome, hoping for a reward that exceeded his initial expectations. While acknowledging that the film deserved a better fate, Knight ultimately accepted the result.

The digital performance opened the door for discussion about the future of the franchise. While studios are typically cautious about greenlighting sequels to films that underperformed at the box office, the streaming success has made a follow-up far more viable.

When asked about the possibility of a continuation, Knight expressed a sense of letting go. “These things are out of our control,” he stated. He emphasized that the magic of filmmaking resides in the team and the experience, hoping that the movie finds its own connection with viewers. He acknowledged that while he enjoyed the creative process, the trajectory of the film is ultimately beyond his control.

Shifting focus from fantasy epics, Knight is now exploring new realms in the animated sphere with his project Wildwood. This epic dark fantasy follows a teenage girl named Prue and her classmate Curtis as they journey into an enchanted forest to find her abducted brother, Mac.

Wildwood has garnered widespread acclaim from critics and audiences alike. The film was lauded as “nothing short of a cinematic miracle,” a high praise delivered by Steve Seigh. Fans are eagerly awaiting the official release of Wildwood on October 23.
