After captivating audiences with the vibrant world of Barbie, director Greta Gerwig is trading in the bright aesthetic for something far more mystical and musical. She is diving headfirst into the enchanting realm of C.S. Lewis, embarking on a cinematic journey with Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew.

Netflix recently unveiled a striking poster for the prequel, hinting at a world steeped in wonder. The image features the enigmatic silhouette of Aslan set against a cosmic backdrop, while two figures ride a luminous pegasus, their forms catching the light of starlight. The promotion is less a simple announcement and more an invitation to an extraordinary, shimmering adventure.

This new vision is deeply rooted in Gerwig’s personal creative philosophy. She revealed that her approach to the film was heavily influenced by the sounds of the 1960s and 1970s rock scene. For Gerwig, the music wasn’t just background noise; it was the very fabric of the world.

“David Bowie saved my life. Paul McCartney saved my life. David Gilmour saved my life. Pete Townshend saved my life. Jimmy Page, Robert Plant…” she shared. “When I heard their music, I had this deep sense of thinking, ‘You’re gonna be okay.’ Narnia is literally a world made out of music. It is a world sung to life by Aslan, and rock n’ roll to me felt like a world made out of music.”

Gerwig’s passion for the Narnia universe runs deep, stemming from her childhood immersion in C.S. Lewis’s epic tales. She spoke about the profound impact of this world on her, recalling how the concept of a universe built on magic and hidden adventure transformed her perspective, instilling a belief that anyone could be swept up into an epic. It was, she noted, an honor to imagine this reality into being.

The production is anchored by a truly stellar cast, bringing a wealth of talent to the role of the Magician’s Nephew and other characters. The ensemble includes David McKenna, Beatrice Campbell, Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, and Ciarán Hinds, alongside familiar faces such as Daniel Craig, Meryl Streep, and Susan Wokoma.

The release strategy is designed to maximize the magic for all viewers. Sneak previews in IMAX will kick off on February 10th, followed by a global wide release two days later. The film will eventually land on Netflix on April 2, 2027, marking a significant milestone as the first Netflix movie to receive such a broad theatrical release.
