Netflix Sci-Fi Action Gets Major Creative Shift

Whatever else happened during the rocky launch of Cyberpunk 2077, the franchise made arguably its smartest strategic move on Netflix.

Instead of sticking rigidly to the game’s complex narrative, the production team opted for a radical change, creating Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. This 2022 anime, produced by CD Projekt Red in collaboration with Studio Trigger, completely ignored the game’s plot and instead told a powerful, personalized story.

It focused on the harrowing journey of a street kid named David Martinez as he burns out in the unforgiving neon landscape of Night City. This shift allowed the project to explore the core emotional and visceral experience of the setting, rather than just replicating the source material.

This gamble paid off handsomely. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners offered a deeply immersive and emotionally resonant look at the world, establishing a visual and thematic foundation that few video game adaptations have ever managed to achieve. It succeeded by telling a story that felt uniquely true to the spirit of Night City.
