Netflix sets date for Charlie vs the Chocolate Factory
Get ready to chase some chocolate and embrace the fantastical, because Netflix is giving the eagerly anticipated animated feature Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory a full-size theatrical premiere.
This move signals a rare step for the streaming giant, marking the first time an upcoming Netflix film will receive a full-scale cinematic run before hitting the screens. The film is slated to debut in cinemas on November 5th, 2027, before making its way to the Netflix streaming platform just 47 days later on December 22nd, 2027.
The theatrical distribution will be handled by Sony Pictures Entertainment, which will manage the international rollout of the film, ensuring a grand presentation for audiences worldwide.
This decision places the new theatrical release alongside other notable projects. It is the third upcoming Netflix feature to secure such a special window; recently, acclaimed films like La Bola Negra and Greta Gerwig’s forthcoming adaptation of Narnia have also been granted similar limited theatrical runs.
Inside the story, the adventure is set against the backdrop of a world ripe with wonder. Willy Wonka, portrayed by Taika Waititi, returns to his factory, driven by a desire to infuse sweetness back into a seemingly bitter world. However, his quest for sweet redemption is complicated by the presence of Charlie Paley (Kit Connor) and his friends.
Facing eviction, these next-generation youngsters hatch a daring plan: break into the factory, steal a priceless Wonka Bar, and secure their own homes. As they navigate the magical confines of the factory, they quickly learn that the fantastical world awaiting them may be more challenging than they ever imagined.
The production is bringing a stellar ensemble to life, featuring voice cast additions including Nicola Coughlan, Charithra Chandran, Samson Kayo, Christopher Chung, Kate Winslet, and Helena Bonham Carter. The film is set to be directed by the dynamic duo of Jared Stern and Elaine Bogan.
