In a significant realignment of power and content strategy, Netflix has made major changes at the helm of its creative operations, signaling a fresh chapter for its global programming.

Bela Bajaria has stepped down as Chief Content Officer, marking a considerable shake-up within the streaming giant. She is being replaced by Peter Rice, a veteran studio executive known for his background at Disney and Fox. Rice will now steer Netflix’s global content organization, overseeing the massive portfolio of scripted and unscripted series, films, and live events across all regions.

The transition also involves the departure of other key figures, including film VP Doug Belgrad and film director Sheroum Kim, further reshaping the executive team responsible for Netflix’s acclaimed catalog.

Bajaria’s tenure was marked by immense creative output. Joining Netflix in 2016, she was instrumental in launching the company’s unscripted division and licensing efforts. Under her leadership, Netflix produced some of the most talked-about global hits, including Bridgerton, Squid Game, Stranger Things, Beef, and Wednesday, alongside films like Frankenstein and KPop Demon Hunters.

However, this period of growth also brought scrutiny. Despite the volume of content produced, the slate’s critical acclaim has seen a slight dip, registering only sixteen Emmy Awards this year, a notable reduction from the 30 awards won the previous year.

This leadership change occurs at a time when Netflix is also making significant operational adjustments, having recently laid off around 1,000 employees, representing the company’s largest workforce reduction to date.

The new leadership brings an executive with deep industry roots. Peter Rice is a beloved veteran executive who has navigated the complexities of major studios, having been involved in producing major films like Warfare and the upcoming Elden Ring.

In a memo to staff, CEO Ted Sarandos expressed a clear vision for the future. He emphasized that this change presents an opportunity to elevate the content slate to the next level, particularly in the UCAN markets where Netflix has a powerful ability to create globally resonant, buzzy hits that drive worldwide conversation. The focus now shifts toward maximizing the impact of their content and solidifying its global reach.
