New Mary Poppins TV Series is coming
A new live-action television series is brewing, promising a decidedly darker and more mysterious take on the beloved classic, Mary Poppins. This upcoming production completely steps away from the familiar 1960s cinematic version, opting instead to delve into the rich, complex world created by author P. L. Travers.
The project is spearheaded by the independent production company Pure Fiction Television, which is backed by established forces like See-Saw Films, known for their acclaimed series such as Slow Horses and Heartstopper.
This adaptation is not a simple remake. Instead, the series aims to be a faithful adaptation of the original eight Mary Poppins books, seeking to open up the larger, more intricate world that Travers first envisioned.
The resulting series promises a significantly different tone than its film counterpart. Where the motion picture offered whimsical charm, this new iteration leans into something more mysterious, mercurial, and dangerous. The stories will follow a character embarking on adventures that are often surreal and occasionally terrifying, exploring the deeper, more complex emotional landscape of the books.
Development and production are being overseen by Tom Winchester, known for his work on Shōgun. Winchester has secured the rights by optioning them from the trustees of the P.L. Travers estate.
To ensure the project maintains a strong creative vision, Winchester is already engaging with top-level showrunners as the production moves into its early stages.
While the creative direction is firmly rooted in the literary source material, there is still a glimmer of possibility for collaboration. Early conversations are underway with Disney to explore whether they might be interested in joining the venture down the line.
