New Prison Experiment Series Trailer
The world of streaming is hungry for reality, and when it found a blueprint for human behavior, it decided to give it a shot. Netflix has recently commissioned a new, unscripted reality series titled The New Stanford Prison Experiment, taking the notorious 1971 study and transplanting it into the modern age.
Having already faced intense scrutiny, the original Stanford Prison Experiment (SPE) remains one of psychology’s most controversial—and chilling—case studies. Conducted by professor Philip Zimbardo at the University of Stanford, the experiment aimed to simulate a prison environment over two weeks to examine how situational variables could dramatically affect human reactions and behaviors.
The historical experiment ended abruptly after just six days. As the assigned guards began to psychologically and physically abuse the prisoners, severe ethical concerns emerged, leading to the study’s immediate termination. This cautionary tale, which was later dramatized in a 2015 film, serves as a powerful reminder of the dangers inherent in unchecked power.
Now, Netflix is bringing this foundational tension to the forefront. The new series promises to explore these dark themes with a fresh, immersive lens. Thirty willing participants will enter a simulated prison environment, where they are randomly assigned the roles of guards or prisoners.
The core narrative pivots on observing the power dynamics at play. The participants will grapple with thrust into a harsh system of hierarchy and control, forcing them to discover whether ordinary people inevitably conform to the roles assigned to them. The series aims to investigate whether empathy, morality, and individuality can survive the intense pressures exerted by these situational roles.
As the power balance shifts and the psychological tension escalates, the central, urgent question emerges: Does absolute power inevitably corrupt? This exploration will place viewers directly into the shifting sands of human nature, examining the brutal reality of power and its consequences.
Executive producers Jane Lipsitz, Dan Cutforth, Nan Strait, Dan Volpe, Jeff Grogan, and Mike Odair are guiding this production, ensuring that the resulting series is not just a spectacle, but a profound examination of human responsibility and the corrosive effects of authority.
The first season will unfold over six intense 45-minute episodes, with the series scheduled to debut on the Netflix service on October 21st. Fans can catch a glimpse of the high-stakes environment in the official trailer available on Dark Horizons.
