New Trailer: ‘Muyi’ The Girl and the Mask
Prepare to step into a world painted with vivid strokes and whispered legends. Gebeka Films in France has unveiled the official trailer for Muyi, a captivating animated feature that blends exotic settings with timeless drama. This is more than just a film; it is a visual feast exploring the boundaries of tradition, freedom, and hidden history.
Titled Muyi, la légende du village des femmes (Muyi, the legend of the village of women), the story unfolds in a mysterious Chinese mountain village, a secluded haven where men are forbidden. Here, the narrative centers on Muyi, a fearless young girl who navigates a world of strict seclusion, only to find herself entangled in a spectacular event that promises to unravel old secrets.
The central intrigue revolves around the Day of the Dead celebrations when a traveling opera troupe performs the renowned play, “The Handsome General.” This performance acts as the catalyst, awakening ancient mysteries within the village. When Muyi decides to try on a mask, the simple act sparks a chain of events that quickly brings chaos and unforeseen revelations upon the secluded community.
The film boasts a stunning visual identity, utilizing a unique 2D painted animation style that gives the entire narrative a distinct, gorgeous aesthetic. This artistic choice elevates the story, making the atmosphere both enchanting and deeply evocative.
The creative vision behind the film comes from animation filmmaker Julien Chheng, known for his distinctive work in Star Wars: Visions, including the story of The Spy Dancer. Chheng brings his signature flair to this new animated epic, melding his artistic sensibility with the rich folklore of the setting.
The cast brings exceptional depth to the roles, featuring noted talents such as Lucie Zhang as Muyi, alongside Jean-Stan Du Pac, Guillaume Bouchède, Yumi Fujimori, Colette Venhard, and Astor Chheng.
This visually rich production has already garnered critical attention, having premiered at the 2026 Annecy Film Festival this summer and making its way to major screenings at TIFF. With a French theatrical release scheduled for February 2027, the buzz is building for this unique cinematic experience, though details regarding a US release are still pending. Get ready for a legend painted in motion.
