Nicolas Cage calls the MCU a glorified WWE

Nicolas Cage: From Comic Books to the Cinematic Ring

The life and career of Nicolas Cage are woven with threads of pop culture, and few passions are as vibrant as the world of comic books. Cage has long held a deep appreciation for these stories, even incorporating them into his personal life by naming one of his sons Kal-El, the legendary Kryptonian name for Superman. This connection to the superhero mythology is not just a footnote; it is a genuine part of his narrative.

His involvement in the superhero sphere extends beyond his personal interests. He has famously portrayed the Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze, in two films, and he has also stepped into the role of Ben Reilly Spider-Man, appearing in both animated and live-action adaptations. Though his television venture, Spider-Noir, concluded after a single season, Cage maintained an upbeat outlook, reflecting on the experience with a philosophy of moving forward: “For me, one season is perfect, having said what I wanted to say with this dangerous, innovative, pop-art Spider-Man,” followed by the inspiring sentiment, “Onwards, upwards, inwards.”

The MCU and the WWE Analogy

Beyond his personal fandom, Cage has also offered some pointed commentary on the massive world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Attending Fan Expo Dallas, the actor shared his perspective on the state of the MCU, drawing a comparison that offered a sharp, witty observation about the industry’s scale and structure. He suggested that while the early stories were wonderful, the current landscape felt more like a highly structured spectacle.

Cage reflected that when looking at the dozens of intelligent and gifted actors bringing these spectacular outfits and engaging in the action, the focus shifts to the spectacle itself. He remarked that it is hard not to see the MCU evolving into something much closer to a well-funded and glorified WWE.

A Favorite Hero

When asked about his favorite Spider-Man, Cage offered a notable endorsement, revealing a surprising choice from the realm of cinematic heroes. During press for his television series, he singled out Andrew Garfield, declaring him as his favorite Spider-Man. Cage praised Garfield’s performance, calling him a marvelous actor and suggesting that among all the younger Peter Parker Spider-Men, Garfield was, in his view, the best Spider-Man in cinema.
