Nolan confirms The Prestige 70mm upgrade

Twenty years after its initial release, Christopher Nolan’s masterful 2006 film The Prestige is gearing up for an ambitious cinematic revival. Set for re-release on January 21st, 2027, this acclaimed exploration of rivalry and illusion is undergoing a significant upgrade that promises to deliver an even more breathtaking viewing experience.

The reason for the extended wait lies in the process of elevating the film’s visual quality. To achieve this anniversary re-release, the production is opting for an upgrade to the grand scale of 70mm film.

Filmmaker Nolan himself is enthusiastic about this transition, highlighting the opportunity to share his vision with new audiences. The conversion process will transform the original footage, which was shot on 35mm film by cinematographer Wally Pfister, into stunning 70 millimetre blow-ups.

Pfister’s work is already celebrated; his anamorphic photography on 35mm gave the film its distinctive visual signature. Nolan noted how extraordinary Pfister’s photography is, emphasizing that this technical upgrade will allow the film’s beauty to truly shine.

The ambition extends beyond just the film stock. Production designer Nathan Crowley has praised the potential, suggesting that blowing up the imagery to 70 millimetre will result in something absolutely beautiful.

The conversion is now underway, a process expected to take place in the coming weeks and promise a richer, more immersive presentation of this celebrated narrative. The casting remains a star-studded ensemble featuring major names including Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall, Michael Caine, Andy Serkis, and David Bowie.
