Nolan reveals his underrated favorite James Bond choice

If Christopher Nolan isn’t already directing Bond 26, many fans would be thrilled if he took the helm on a mission featuring the legendary superspy. While the director is currently taking a brief hiatus following the release of The Odyssey, there’s a strong argument that Nolan remains an outstanding fit for the character’s next cinematic adventure.

The conversation about James Bond, however, revealed some deeply personal insights into Nolan’s creative DNA. During a recent discussion with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Nolan shared his favorite Bond film and actor.

When asked to name his top picks, Nolan pointed toward On Her Majesty’s Secret Service as his favorite Bond movie, a choice that many viewers can easily decipher if they appreciate the cinematic landscape of films like Inception. For the actor, he singled out Timothy Dalton.

Nolan admitted that while films like The Living Daylights were very good, he was slightly let down by the climax in technical terms. However, he praised Dalton, noting that he aligns most closely with Ian Fleming’s gritty and cynical portrayal of the character in the novels. Although Nolan conceded that License to Kill is aging better than expected in some ways, he still felt Dalton embodied the spirit of Bond most effectively.

This preference for Dalton speaks volumes about a deep appreciation for the source material; it’s clear why Nolan gravitates toward the character that mirrors Fleming’s literary vision.

When pressed on whether the influence of Bond has faded from his creative system, Nolan offered a balanced response: “Yes and no.” He acknowledged that foundational elements loved during childhood tend to linger throughout life, noting that Bond was a significant part of his formative years and profoundly shaped his creative DNA.

While he is content to let other filmmakers handle the franchise, there remains a tantalizing possibility of Christopher Nolan steering a future cinematic mission for 007 down the line. With plenty of creative energy remaining, fans can hold onto the hope that Nolan may revisit this iconic role someday.
