Odyssey reaches global box office peak
The cinematic world is currently locked in a thrilling box office rivalry, proving that epic storytelling and superhero franchises can indeed claim the highest crowns. While the spectacle of Spider-Man: Brand New Day has amassed staggering global figures, Christopher Nolan’s grand adventure, The Odyssey, has pulled off an astonishing comeback, dethroning the superhero sensation.
The Odyssey has seized the top position at the worldwide weekend box office, tallying $46 million ($13 million domestically and $33 million overseas). This phenomenal run saw it take the lead over the massive Spider-Man film in its sixth frame with $44.1 million.
The epic saga continues its impressive momentum, now standing at a worldwide total of $1.627 billion in its eighth weekend. Analysts predict that The Odyssey is poised to surpass the $1.67 billion haul of Jurassic World, potentially becoming the highest-grossing movie for Universal Pictures ever in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, the Spider-Man franchise remains an absolute juggernaut, posting a phenomenal worldwide total of $2.4 billion through Sunday, with $917.8 million domestically and $1.485 billion overseas. Despite its massive reach, the superhero film is still tracking behind the epic classic in global grossing.
Domestically, the financial landscape shows diverse results. The Mark Wahlberg-led By Any Means film opened strongly, drawing $7.4 million for the three-day run and $9.1 million for the four-day holiday. Other theatrical showings saw mixed results, with films like Coyote vs. Acme seeing a slight dip in its second weekend, and The Dog Stars experiencing a significant decline in attendance.
Adding another layer of interest, the re-release market delivered some delightful surprises. The 20th-anniversary re-release of Cars opened in sixth place, netting $6.1 million for the three-day and $7.6 million for the four-day runs, setting new records for a Pixar re-release in over a decade. Similarly, a re-release of Akira proved to be a major hit, achieving its largest re-release haul to date with $2.7 million for the three-day and $3.2 million for the four-day.
