Gaming enthusiasts are about to get a major upgrade, as Sony is bringing cutting-edge AI upscaling technology to the base PlayStation 5.

The promise of stunning, cinematic visuals previously locked behind the more powerful PS5 Pro is now within reach for all console owners. Sony has announced the arrival of Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR, a performance tier of AI upscaling developed through Project Amethyst, a collaborative effort with AMD.

To understand the scale of this innovation, it helps to look at what came before. The PS5 Pro utilizes PSSR, or Performance Super Resolution, which employs dedicated hardware to analyze game images pixel by pixel, applying AI to upscale them with unmatched detail and stability. This impressive experience, however, required specialized hardware and limited the ability to bring that fidelity to the standard PS5.

QSSR changes the game by leveraging software-based AI to deliver similar visual fidelity and stability improvements on the base console. While PSSR remains the gold standard for the PS5 Pro, QSSR delivers notable enhancements in both image detail and overall stability for a much broader audience.

This new technology is already seeing action in the hands of gamers. The first two titles to adopt the QSSR treatment are the recently released Marvel’s Wolverine and last year’s Ghost of Yōtei. Both games are being patched to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option on the PS5, joining the existing FSR technology.

This integration means that console players no longer have to choose between high-end graphical power and accessibility. QSSR ensures that players on the standard PS5 can enjoy richly detailed and stable imagery, making truly high-fidelity gaming a mainstream reality.

The visual improvements are already being showcased, with video content released for Marvel’s Wolverine demonstrating the tangible difference the new upscaling technology makes. This development signals a clear shift toward democratizing high-end graphical experiences and making stunning visuals accessible to everyone who owns a PlayStation console.
