The A24 universe is buzzing with a new, darkly compelling project, and this time, it’s helmed by the visionary director Ari Aster. His latest endeavor, Scapegoat, is set to draw a powerful ensemble cast, bringing together veterans and breakout stars for a film that promises to be as emotionally labyrinthine as Aster’s previous works.

Joining the cast are names already synonymous with intense performances: Ella Purnell, known for her intense roles in Fallout and Yellowjackets; acting legend Jude Law; and rising stars Samba Schutte and Caleb Landry Jones.

But the true mystery lies in the narrative itself. Alongside Purnell and Landry Jones, the film features the acclaimed leads Scarlett Johansson and Jacob Elordi, whose dynamic pairing anchors a plot shrouded in ambiguity. While the exact genre remains under wraps, whispers suggest a blend of traditional drama and a sweeping sci-fi romance.

One intriguing synopsis circulating in June suggested a stark premise: Johansson plays a surgeon tasked with operating on a character inspired by Jake Paul, only to witness that character’s death. The story then plunges into the brutal aftermath, as the surgeon faces intense scrutiny from the main antagonists—the character’s wife and brother.

Ari Aster, who penned the script and will direct and produce alongside Lars Knudsen, is following up his successful A24 run with Scapegoat. This marks his fifth feature with the studio, following Beau is Afraid and Eddington.

Aster’s distinctive style has garnered significant attention, and his previous cinematic output includes productions like Dream Scenario, Bugonia, and The Drama, demonstrating a commitment to deeply unsettling and character-driven storytelling.

The creative team brings a wealth of experience to the table. Purnell, for instance, has been incredibly busy, balancing demanding acting roles in television shows like Sweetpea and Yellowjackets, alongside voice work in franchises like Arcane and Star Trek: Prodigy.

As the film gears up for production, the convergence of these talented actors and the auteur’s signature vision promises a powerful, unpredictable cinematic experience that is poised to redefine the boundaries of the genre.
