The production of the highly anticipated sequel to the classic racing drama, Days of Thunder, is already stirring controversy, with actor Randy Quaid publicly voicing his displeasure over the casting of Anne Hathaway. While the film is gearing up for production, Quaid has taken to social media to express a strong opinion on the romantic lead, arguing that the casting choice doesn’t align with the original spirit of the franchise.
The casting for the sequel was initially revealed through a promotional video featuring Tom Cruise and Anne Hathaway alongside a NASCAR race car, announcing the film’s planned June 2028 release. However, behind the scenes, the tension over who should fill the romantic role has boiled over, with Quaid insisting that the pairing needed for a true cinematic experience is something else entirely.
Quaid’s critique targets the perceived lack of chemistry and star power in the current casting. Speaking to X, he suggested that the sequel should feature Nicole Kidman, calling for a return to the original romantic dynamic. He argued that Anne Hathaway was not the right choice, pointing out that she is not perceived as “sexy” and suggesting that the focus should be on a different kind of star power for the film.
The comments went beyond mere preference, delving into broader cultural observations. Quaid suggested that casting Anne Hathaway felt like a “leftist, woke, horrible choice” for the established NASCAR audience.
