Ranking Ghost Face Killers in Scream

If there is one thing that slashers have established over the years, it is that these relentless villains always come back. Yet, not every masked killer possesses the cockroach-like resilience of Jason Voorhees, so filmmakers often take alternate paths to explain why the same antagonist can return after being killed in a previous installment.

The most enduring explanation for this tradition comes from the Scream franchise. In those films, Ghost Face is less a true character and more a mantle—a way for disgruntled killers to don the iconic costume to add to the mythology of the Woodsboro murders. This creative flexibility is why the franchise has seen nearly twenty different characters wear the infamous Fun World mask since 1996.

To celebrate this legacy and the variety of horror embodied by the Ghost Face, I compiled a ranking of every incarnation we’ve seen. My evaluation wasn’t based on cinematic quality, but on the killer’s skill, motivation, and sheer scare-factor.

At the top spot, claiming the crown for sheer cinematic magic, is the iconic duo of Stu Macher and Billy Loomis from the original Scream. Their intensely disturbing, yet undeniably sexy, dynamic perfectly captured the essence of a media-obsessed high school pairing.

Following them closely is the wicked pairing of Jill and Charlie from Scream 4. Their story, centered around an unhinged mastermind and a clever plan to pass the torch, remains one of the most memorable twists in the franchise history.

The next spots are filled by compelling antagonists, including Roman Bridger from Scream 3, whose role as Ghost Face was brilliantly played as a playful, satirical nod to Hollywood corruption.

We move into the modern era with the brutal ensemble of Ethan, Quinn, and Wayne in Scream VI. This triple threat delivered some of the most visceral and terrifying kills in the series, proving that a group of killers can be even more frightening than a single masked figure.

Further down the list are memorable pairings like Nancy Loomis and Mickey Altieri from Scream 2, who delivered thrilling chase sequences and a gloriously meta opening kill.

Other strong entries include Richie and Amber from Scream (2022), and Piper and Kieran (with Tom) from the MTV era, who managed to weave compelling teen drama with slasher elements.

Even recent entries feature formidable killers, such as Jamal and Beth from Scream: Resurrection, and the newest entrants, Jessica and Marco in the upcoming Scream VII.

Ultimately, the enduring power of the Ghost Face lies not just in the blood and gore, but in the deeply unsettling exploration of media and fame that each killer brings to the screen.
