The world of science fiction just got a serious upgrade. At New York City Comic Con, fans were treated to a tantalizing glimpse of what is coming next for the iconic franchise, with a new trailer for Blade Runner 2099 debuting and setting the stage for a profound exploration of humanity’s future.

This upcoming eight-episode limited series, produced by Amazon MGM Studios and the Alcon Television Group, promises to dive deep into the madness of the Replicant world, starring some of cinema’s most compelling talent. At the helm of this ambitious project are the formidable talents of Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer, who bring depth and star power to the narrative.

The story is set fifty years after the events of Blade Runner 2049, depicting a Los Angeles reborn, yet fundamentally altered—a city that has been reshaped by an existence beyond mere humanity. At the heart of this new narrative is Cora, played by Hunter Schafer, a fugitive desperately trying to escape, who steps into the shadow of a Blade Runner. Her journey takes an unexpected turn when she must partner with Olwen, played by Michelle Yeoh, a Replicant nearing the end of her existence, as they hunt a runaway who holds the key to unraveling the city’s fragile reality.

Beyond the action and the high-stakes chase, the series delves into truly philosophical territory. Creator Silka Luisa reflected on the core fascination with the Replicants, noting that she found herself rooting for them over humanity. She posited that the series isn’t just about conflict, but about the consequences of a future where the established rules have been shattered. As Luisa remarked, “It may not be humans who teach us what being human is,” suggesting that the boundaries of consciousness are far more fluid than previously imagined.

The series imagines a post-conflict world where humans and Replicants have engaged in a devastating war. Instead of focusing solely on the battles, the narrative examines the aftermath, forcing viewers to confront the existential questions of what remains when the dominant species is no longer at the top of the food chain. This exploration asks: “What happens when our time ends? What happens when we are no longer the dominant species?”

With cast members including Dimitri Abold, Lewis Gribben, and Matthew Needham, the series is anchored by a talented ensemble, further enhanced by actors such as Katelyn Rose Downey, Daniel Rigby, Amy Lennox, Sheila Atim, Tom Burke, and Maurizio Lombardi.

Blade Runner 2099 will arrive on Amazon Prime Video on November 25, 2026, promising a visually stunning and emotionally complex journey into a future where the lines between life and consciousness are beautifully, terrifyingly blurred.
