Zach Cregger’s latest entry into the horror arena delivered a massive punch this weekend, showcasing the enduring appeal of the “Resident Evil” franchise. The film exploded at the box office, securing a staggering $108.3 million worldwide, with $60 million earned domestically and $48.3 million overseas.

This phenomenal opening performance marks a significant milestone for Cregger, establishing his debut as his biggest box-office success to date. It easily surpassed the $70 million worldwide start of “Weapons” released last year, cementing the franchise’s status as a powerful cinematic force.

Beyond its immediate success, “Resident Evil” took the crown for the second-best start among horror films worldwide this year, trailing only the behemoth “Backrooms” which drew $118 million. Furthermore, in international markets, the franchise demonstrated dominance, topping the charts in overseas territories against “Backrooms,” which opened at $36.6 million.

The success of this new installment is underscored by its historical weight. The worldwide opening total has eclipsed the final gross of the original 2002 “Resident Evil” ($103 million) and even surpassed the disappointing performance of the 2021 reboot, “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City” ($42 million).

The legacy of the franchise is undeniable. “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” from 2016 holds the franchise’s highest total gross at $312 million, a figure which includes an intriguing half of its revenue generated from the Chinese market.

Domestically, the franchise continues to generate substantial revenue, with “Resident Evil: Afterlife” leading the pack at a total gross of $60.1 million. This film’s domestic opening weekend is poised to potentially surpass those figures when final weekend numbers are tallied. The results clearly demonstrate that the enduring appeal of the survival horror genre continues to captivate audiences around the globe.
