Resident Evil hits $26.5M Opening Day
When Zach Cregger’s R-rated horror spectacle hit the multiplex, it didn’t just open; it roared. The film brought in 26.3 million on its opening day, including previews, sending ripples through the box office and setting up a fascinating comparison with the rest of the cinematic landscape.
The enthusiasm surrounding the performance quickly escalated beyond the initial figure. While the studio is projecting a three-day total of between $53 and $55 million, other prognosticators are already suggesting a potentially even larger haul, aiming closer to $60 million.
This impressive debut easily surpassed earlier projections, which had pegged the film for a more modest $40 to $50 million. However, the true story is unfolding as the box office grapples with timing—the exact front-loading of the film is a variable that could dramatically shift the three-day outlook if today’s results continue the momentum.
What fueled this unexpected surge? A significant portion of the success appears to be driven by organic buzz. The film earned a B+ CinemaScore, a surprisingly high rating for an R-rated horror entry, which stands in stark contrast to the typically lower ratings often seen in the genre.
This positive critical reception seems to have translated directly into word-of-mouth success, encouraging audiences to flock to the theater and spread the word about the experience.
While the horror film was making waves, other releases were also fighting for attention, showcasing the diverse competition in the market.
For example, Practical Magic 2 is already showing signs of a decline, registering $10.9 million for the three-day, marking a significant 64% drop.
In contrast, other tentpole titles are maintaining solid positions. Spider-Man: Brand New Day settled in third place with $6.3 million for the three-day, contributing to a substantial domestic total of $944.3 million in its eighth weekend.
Other contenders included The Odyssey, which earned $5 million, and Coyote vs. Acme, which brought in $4.2 million, reaching a total of $54.5 million.
Even the nostalgia factor played a role, as the Transformers 40th Anniversary re-release managed to secure seventh place with $2.9 million, bringing in a total of $3.9 million to date.
Meanwhile, other dramas and comedies also contributed to the week’s earnings. The Ethan Hawke-led western The Weight debuted in ninth place with $2.55 million, benefiting from strong reviews despite a modest gross. And continuing its strong run, Buddy remains on track, posting $1.94 million in its fourth week, bringing its total to $24.9 million.
