Avengers: Infinity War Review: A Blockbuster That Dares to Hurt

8.5/10 — Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Pros
- Thanos is a great villain
- Excellent character pairings
- Bold, shocking finale
Cons
- Needs prior viewing
- Crowded cast
The Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy unite to stop the cosmic tyrant Thanos from collecting all six Infinity Stones. It brought together a decade of Marvel films.
What works
Josh Brolin makes Thanos a surprisingly sympathetic and menacing villain, and the film juggles dozens of characters with real skill. The pairings, such as Thor with the Guardians, are great fun, and the ending is a shock that few blockbusters have the nerve to attempt.
Where it falters
It relies on knowing the previous films, and the sheer number of characters means some get little to do.
Verdict
A confident, crowd-pleasing spectacle that earns its gut-punch ending.
