Coco Review: Pixar's Vibrant Celebration of Family

9/10 — Coco (2017)
Pros
- Stunning colour and design
- Memorable songs
- Emotional ending
Cons
- Predictable twist
Miguel, a young boy who dreams of being a musician despite his family’s ban on music, finds himself in the Land of the Dead on Día de Muertos. Pixar worked with Mexican cultural consultants to get the details right.
What works
The Land of the Dead is a visual feast of colour and invention, and the songs, including ‘Remember Me’, are memorable. The story builds to a poignant, tearjerking finale, and the voice cast, mostly Latino, brings authenticity and warmth.
Where it falters
The central plot twist can be guessed, and the structure follows familiar Pixar beats.
Verdict
Gorgeous, heartfelt and deeply moving. A modern Pixar classic.
