Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair Review: Tarantino's Revenge Epic in One Piece

Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair (2003-2004)

8.5/10 — Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair (2003-2004)

Pros

  • Uma Thurman's fierce lead
  • Inventive, stylish action
  • Fantastic soundtrack

Cons

  • Tonal shifts
  • Heavy on blood and style

A former assassin known as The Bride, played by Uma Thurman, wakes from a coma and sets out to kill the squad who tried to murder her on her wedding day, and their leader, Bill. This cut stitches Volumes 1 and 2 into a single film.

What works

Tarantino’s love of kung fu, spaghetti Western and samurai films is on every frame, from the House of Blue Leaves massacre to the quieter showdowns. Thurman is formidable, David Carradine is silkily menacing as Bill, and the soundtrack is, as ever, brilliantly curated.

Where it falters

The tone shifts from stylised bloodbath to talky drama, and the style occasionally outweighs substance. It’s very violent.

Verdict

Stylish, thrilling and gloriously excessive. Watching it in one go is the best way to take it in.
