Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Review: A New Look for Superhero Cinema

9/10 — Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
Pros
- Groundbreaking visual style
- Warm, witty script
- Great vocal cast
Cons
- Visually overwhelming at times
Brooklyn teenager Miles Morales is bitten by a radioactive spider and discovers other Spider-people from alternate universes have been pulled into his world. It won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
What works
The animation, with its halftone dots, speech bubbles and frame-rate play, feels like a living comic book. The script is funny and heartfelt, the Spider-people are all distinctive, and Miles’s journey is genuinely moving.
Where it falters
The multiverse premise is busy, and the final act’s visuals can be overwhelming.
Verdict
A fresh, funny, beautiful film that reinvented what animated blockbusters could look like.
