The Matrix Review: The Film That Changed Action Cinema

The Matrix (1999)

9/10 — The Matrix (1999)

Pros

  • Groundbreaking action and effects
  • Memorable villain
  • Distinctive visual style

Cons

  • Occasionally clunky dialogue
  • Sequels didn't live up to it

Computer hacker Neo, played by Keanu Reeves, learns that his reality is a simulation created by machines and joins a rebellion led by Morpheus and Trinity. It was a hit on release and became one of the most imitated films of its era.

What works

The bullet-time effects and wire-fu fight choreography were revolutionary, and the stylish green-tinted look is unmistakable. Hugo Weaving’s Agent Smith is a great villain, and the film’s ideas about reality and control are intriguing without ever stopping the action.

Where it falters

Some of the philosophy is surface-level, and the dialogue can get clunky. Its sequels never quite matched it.

Verdict

A thrilling, influential sci-fi action classic that still looks great.
