The Prestige Review: A Magician's Duel With a Twist

The Prestige (2006)

8.5/10 — The Prestige (2006)

Pros

  • Clever structure
  • Strong rivalry between Jackman and Bale
  • Gorgeous period design

Cons

  • Confusing timeline
  • Sci-fi turn divides viewers

In Victorian London, two stage magicians, Hugh Jackman’s Angier and Christian Bale’s Borden, become bitter rivals, each trying to outdo the other’s greatest trick. Christopher Nolan structures the film like a magic trick itself.

What works

The film’s pledge, turn and prestige structure plays fair, and the performances, including David Bowie’s turn as Nikola Tesla, are excellent. The period detail is lovely, and the final reveals reward repeat viewings.

Where it falters

The timeline hops can be confusing on a first viewing, and the late science-fiction element may not suit everyone.

Verdict

A smart, atmospheric puzzle that’s more fun the second time round.
