Toy Story Review: The Film That Changed Animation

9/10 — Toy Story (1995)
Pros
- Brilliant script
- Hanks and Allen's chemistry
- Historic animation
Cons
- Dated human models
- Sid scenes could frighten kids
Woody, a cowboy doll, sees his place as Andy’s favourite toy threatened by the arrival of the space ranger Buzz Lightyear. It was the first fully computer-animated feature film.
What works
The script is sharp, with brilliant gags and a heartfelt story about jealousy and friendship, and Tom Hanks and Tim Allen make a great duo. Randy Newman’s songs are a perfect fit, and the visuals, while dated, have a plastic charm that suits toys.
Where it falters
The human characters look rough by today’s standards, and Sid’s mutant toys may scare small children.
Verdict
A funny, imaginative landmark that’s lost none of its charm.
