Your Name. Review: A Time-Bending Teen Romance
9/10 — Your Name. (2016)
Pros
- Breathtaking animation
- Strong soundtrack
- Emotional story
Cons
- Loose logic
- Occasionally contrived
Mitsuha, a country girl, and Taki, a Tokyo boy, mysteriously begin swapping bodies and find a connection before a disaster threatens. Makoto Shinkai’s film was a worldwide hit.
What works
The animation is stunning, especially the skies and cityscapes, and RADWIMPS’s soundtrack is perfectly woven into the story. The first half is warm and funny, and the second shifts into something more profound and emotional.
Where it falters
The time-twist logic is a little loose, and some viewers will find the romance contrived.
Verdict
Beautiful, moving and endlessly rewatchable.
