Arcane Review: A Visual Triumph from League of Legends
9/10 — Arcane (2021)
Pros
- Stunning painterly animation
- Emotional, mature storytelling
- Great soundtrack
Cons
- Rushed second season
Set in the rich city of Piltover and the undercity of Zaun, Arcane follows sisters Vi and Jinx as they are torn apart by conflict, while scientists unlock dangerous magic. Made by Fortiche for Riot Games.
What works
The painterly animation is among the best ever seen on TV, and the series blends 2D and 3D to stunning effect. The characters are rich and tragic, and the story is surprisingly mature in its handling of grief and class. The music is fantastic.
Where it falters
The second season’s pacing is rushed, and some narrative threads are left underdeveloped.
Verdict
A masterpiece of animation that stands apart from its game roots.
