Band of Brothers Review: A Gripping War Epic

9.5/10 — Band of Brothers (2001)
Pros
- Realistic, brilliantly staged combat
- Excellent ensemble
- Poignant veteran interviews
Cons
- Large cast can confuse
- Idealised characters
Based on Stephen Ambrose’s book, the series follows the 101st Airborne’s Easy Company from training in the US through D-Day, Market Garden and the Battle of the Bulge to the end of the war. Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg produced it.
What works
The battle sequences, such as the Carentan fight and the Bulge winter, are staggeringly realistic, and the ensemble cast, including Damian Lewis and Ron Livingston, is excellent. The episodes are interspersed with interviews with the real veterans, adding emotional weight.
Where it falters
The large cast makes the early episodes hard to follow, and the series idealises its characters.
Verdict
Powerful, authentic and moving, and an essential piece of war storytelling.
